Hypnosis Tree
Theresa Timony,
Certified Hypnotherapist, Nurse Practitioner
Hypnosis is a relaxed state of internally focused attention, called trance. We all experience periods of trance daily (driving or being fully absorbed in a book or movie, so we lose track of time, etc). We are in a state of self-hypnosis much of the time without realizing it. Our internal thoughts (self talk) can be empowering or self-depreciating which then impacts our perceptions of other people and the world. By learning self-hypnosis techniques we create new neural pathways enabling us to control physiologic states we previously thought we had no control over, and to reach our goals and dreams more easily.
Hypnosis training is a form of biofeedback (a small example is picturing your hands warmer can reduce migraine headaches). As a Nurse Practitioner and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and Coach, I also have extensive experience and training in Neurofeedback, PsychoNeuroImmunology, various models of Psychotherapy, Psychiatric Medication Management, Breath-work, and Integration Therapy after having altered states of consciousness.
By practicing shifting from our logical left sided brain to using our right sided creative brain we build new brain connections and pathways.
When we are in this very relaxed state (theta brain waves) then we can tap into our subconscious which allows us to: reduce pain or anxiety, improve sleep, release trauma, change stubborn unhealthy habits, improve physical healing processes, access creative problem solving, and access higher levels of academic or athletic performance than we ever thought possible, etc.

WELCOME
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to help make positive changes your behavior, emotions, and attitudes. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, heightened suggestibility, and deep relaxation.
When in hypnosis we are not asleep (Delta brain waves).
And, hypnotherapy is not like stage hypnosis where it seems that someone else is controlling what you do or say. In hypnotherapy you are aware and can make our own decisions about what you will do or say at that time. In hypnotherapy you are so relaxed that you are not fully alert either. You are in that very relaxed state in between alertness and sleep (Theta brain waves).
We are also in this Theta brain wave state every time we are falling asleep (hypnogogic state), and again when we are transitioning from sleep to waking state (hypnopompic state). When in this relaxed state we can easily access our own inner wisdom in our subconscious.
Our subconscious, and our dreams, communicate in metaphors, images, or abstract ideas. It is very right brained abstract thinking, not left brained linear, logical thinking. Hypnosis communicates with the subconscious to help make changes that have not been possible by using our left brained, logical thinking. Hypnotherapy uses images and metaphors that are specifically designed to that person's interests, hobbies and passions to help in the process.
Often times, your current "symptoms" stem from underlying beliefs that are formed in early childhood. Even if you never experienced "major trauma," we all develop beliefs in early childhood based on seeing the world through the eyes of a child (not yet having the maturity or world experiences to see the big picture and other people's perspectives). Therefore, many of us take on core limiting beliefs in early childhood, that continue to influence the way we see the world as adults ("I am not enough," "I am not worthy," I am not lovable," etc.)
You don't need to be "fixed," you simply need to remember who you truly are before all these layers were placed over your lens. This is done by rewiring the nervous system so that it is not in a state of chronic stress ("fight or flight"), but can have the flexibility to easily fluctuate from "rest and digest" to short term activation when needed.
The physical body holds onto trauma, storing repressed emotions, which causes illness and disease. By uncovering limiting core beliefs that you didn't even know were there (like software running in the background), we can then reprogram with empowering, resilient, confident beliefs. This allows you to be, and attract, what you truly want in life, and what brings you joy and fulfillment.
How Hypnotherapy Works
1. Inducing a Hypnotic State: The process begins with inducing a hypnotic state, often using relaxation techniques. The therapist uses guided imagery to help the individual achieve a state of deep relaxation. In this state, the mind becomes more open to suggestions.
2. Heightened Suggestibility: Once in this state, the person's subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions. The conscious mind, which is usually critical and analytical, becomes less dominant. This allows the therapist to introduce new ideas, beliefs, or behaviors directly to the subconscious mind.
3. Therapeutic Suggestions: The therapist uses carefully crafted suggestions to address the issue at hand. These suggestions are often focused on promoting positive change, such as reducing the desire to smoke, building self-confidence, or managing pain. The suggestions are framed in a way that aligns with the individual's goals and values.
4. Reprogramming the Mind: Hypnotherapy can help "reprogram" the mind by altering the subconscious associations and patterns related to certain behaviors or feelings. For example, in smoking cessation, the therapist may work on changing the person's subconscious association between smoking and stress relief, replacing it with healthier coping mechanisms.
Uses of Hypnotherapy
- Behavioral Changes: Smoking cessation, weight loss, and overcoming addictive behaviors.
- Emotional Well-being: Managing anxiety, stress, phobias, and depression.
- Habit Control: Reducing nail-biting, bed-wetting, and other unwanted habits.
- Pain Management: Reducing pain perception in chronic pain conditions or during medical procedures.
- Enhancing Performance: Improving focus, confidence, and performance in areas like sports, academics, or public speaking.
Myths and Misconceptions
Hypnotherapy is often misunderstood due to portrayals in movies and stage performances. Here are some common myths clarified:
- Loss of Control: People fear losing control under hypnosis, but in reality, they remain aware and can reject any suggestion they find uncomfortable.
- Being Asleep: Hypnosis is not the same as being asleep. Individuals are in a state of focused attention and can recall the experience afterward.
- Mind Control: Hypnotherapy is not about controlling someone's mind. It is a collaborative process where the person actively participates in the therapeutic experience.
The Role of the Hypnotherapist
A qualified hypnotherapist plays a crucial role in guiding the individual through the process. They:
- Assess the individual's needs and goals.
- Use techniques to induce a hypnotic state.
- Craft suggestions tailored to the individual's objectives.
- Ensure the person feels safe, comfortable, and empowered throughout the session.
Benefits of Hypnotherapy
- Non-Invasive: It is a non-invasive technique that can complement other forms of therapy or treatment.
- Empowering: It empowers individuals to tap into their subconscious mind, promoting self-awareness and self-improvement.
-Versatile: It can be adapted to address a wide range of physical and psychological issues.
